With a drop of one, the spell’s begun.
With a drop of two, the spell is true.
With a drop of three, the spell is free.
With a drop of four, the power is stored.
With a drop of five, this spell will thrive.
With a drop of six, this spell I fix.
With a drop of seven, the spell will waken.
With a drop of eight, the spell will wait.
With a drop of nine, the spell is mine.
With a drop of ten, it begins again…
There is one word found in every dictionary in the world that brings misunderstanding, fear, and condemnation all at once.
That word is…
Witch
For many years the artisans, at Spooky Hollow, have always wanted to do a theme revolving around witches and witchcraft.
“Yes, we have made references to witches and witchcraft in our displays prior to this year,” shares Gracie. “Nonetheless, we have never dedicated an entire theme to witches and witchcraft.”
Each theme is carefully chosen while considering all of the items, props, and décor that are required to create the theme. Further more, themes are chosen due to their relevance to Halloween while taking into consideration if there is any historical content to the theme. Unbeknownst to many, the celebration of Halloween (or Samhain) encompasses many historical aspects.
“It is easy to get caught up in the world of Harry Potter, we see it every Halloween.” continues Gracie. “Very few people know – or choose not to know – the horrific facts revolving around witches and witchcraft; even today.
This year was such a challenge for me.” shares Gracie. “I am a seeker of the truth and when I delved deep into the truth about witches and witchcraft – what I found was heart wrenching. How can I create a theme of pure magick; something fun for children of all ages – when the stigma of being a witch still haunts those who practice the craft today? Further more, how could I educate the public that witchcraft is in no way evil?”
Why are we taught to fear witches, and not those who murdered them?

It was during Spooky Hollow’s annual Light-up ceremony that Gracie, dressed as a witch, educated those in attendance. She touched on how the witch trials came about and went on to speak about the most evil book ever written. Gracie educated the audience about the positive aspects of witches and witchcraft.
The true definition of the word witch is someone who is an earth tender.
A witch is a person who works with Mother Earth to keep her waters clean,
the air clean, the soil clean, the animals and birds cared for;
they are a keeper of Mother Earth and all of her inhabitants.

“At one point, I believed I let our followers and attendees down with my speech,” shares Gracie. “I was surprised to find how many people came up to me after to ask questions. Even now, I still have people stop me to inquire about it.”
This year’s light-up ceremony was held on a beautiful day. The artisans welcomed a new sponsor, Midwest Witchery & Healing, as well as a new food truck, Lil Ferrucci’s.
As we progressed towards Halloween, we were graced with beautiful weather with temperatures ranging from 60 degrees all the way up to the high 80’s. It was as if all the witches in the world were supporting Spooky Hollow with good weather.
Then Halloween came. Halloween arrived with rain that turned into snow. With a light dusting of snow, wind, and cold air – Spooky Hollow shined once again.
“I feel bad,” shares Gracie. “Many of the new props we added this year, we could not put out on Halloween due to the weather.”
“Gracie worked really hard on those props,” adds Jack. “She was so bummed she couldn’t display her work for all to enjoy. But, the weather would have destroyed them. At least people got to see them on October 10th for the light-up ceremony!”
New this year included: four new pumpkin ghouls, two pumpkin heads, three new carved pumpkins, five spiders, a giant lighted spider web, pentacle, melted candles, skeleton moths & butterflies, Puff the dragon & his three dragon buddies, broom stand with brooms, Broom Hilda, The Cailleach, Gilly, three new signs, Wolfy Jr., Rascal the skeleton raccoon, two-headed vulture, otters, kitties, lily pads, and baby alien.
This year marks the first year the artisans placed four Easter eggs within the display. Visitors were challenged to find Skelly, Little Nicky, Frankenstein, and a rubber ducky. Very few people found all four without the help of Gracie.
